Lyrically, the best written of songs on this
album. It touches on a matter that has relevance to us all: lies,
deceits, half-truths, and doublespeak. Most everyone does it, or
has done at some point in their lives. You don't want someone else
to know something, so you lie about or talk your way around it. This
songs deals with what happens when someone sees through your verbal defenses
and finds out what you don't want them to. As the words illustrate,
when you get caught lying or doublespeaking, it causes people to lose trust
in you and may damage relationships. You might hurt, alienate, or
even lose a friend, family member, or significant other, depending on how
bad you are about it. Chad will have to forgive me, but I think this
songs deserves a WIC-out label (it can still keep its WIC-in label, though).
Saying everything but the truth is a rampant problem in society.
We are quite hypocritical in this area, as we tend to look down on people
who do it, even though most us do it themselves. There are those
of us who make a living with the slight of tongue. We call those
people agents, lawyers, diplomats, and politicians.
Just an aside, I like to think that I have
a little skill in double speak. It can be an interesting exercise
to try it on your friends if you ever get into an appropriate conversation.
You have to do your best to answer questions without really answering them.
Be careful not to get into the habit of it, and only do it to people you
know with no intent to gain from it. For more perspective on doublespeak,
highfalutin language, and other spoken and written gambits, read the George
Orwell Essay "Politics and the English Language."
