"Never Said" (WIC-in, WIC-out)
Every day I think it shows
The bond between us grows and grows
With every hand I can lend
In your eyes I'd like to see
Something more than you and me
But for now I'm just your friend
Where you go I'd be right there
But I can't tell if you would care
Could you give me something please?
To set this mind of mine at ease.
To be here sitting next to you
I wonder if it could be true
Signs of hope in every day
I feel I've known you for a while
I'm torn apart by every smile
Still I wonder what you'd say
Did not take me long to see
That there would never be a "we"
With all these doubts inside my head
All I hear you never said
It seems it's time to say good-bye
The perfect chance for me to try
All I could do was pretend
Underneath a waning moon
I ask if I'd see you soon
But I know I never will again

Ah, the plight of so many of us.  Few things are more painful than love unrequited.  Okay, so this isn't really love, more like desire or attraction.  Regardless, this song is an interesting twist on having feelings for another and getting nothing back.  Most songs of this nature focus on the "oh woe is me" aspect of such disappointment.  This one, however, looks at what could have been in a contemplative way.  The young man speaking (I say man because I am familiar with this story, though the concept could apply to a woman as well) is attracted to a young woman he has befriended.  As they spend time together, he is looking for signs that she might see something in him as well.  But each time he sees nothing, and eventually realizes that she's just not interested.  He still holds a tiny hope in the back of his mind.  Eventually, the time comes when their association ends, and he makes a last ditch attempt to stay in touch with her, but knows it's not going to happen.  He is not really talking to her, though.  He is saying all these words to himself, as if he were talking to her.  We see that she has no say in the song.  This is a nice symbol to represent the whole situation.  He is doing all the talking, she says nothing.  In the actual situation, he was making all the effort to foster a relationship, while she made none.  The song reminds of someone playing out a scenario within the mind.
To go along with the downcast, contemplative mood, the music is slow, quiet, and very mellow.  There is no extravagant guitar work, no wild and sad high notes, or anything like that.  There our guy isn't crying or angry or the like.  He's just mildly depressed and accepting his reality.  The rhythm is played in a light distortion, while the lead is clean.  This further adds to the somber mood.
Chad actually told me this entire story.  It is somewhat involved, but here's what it boils down to.  During the fall semester of his first year in college, he met a girl in one of his classes.  She was having some difficulty in the class, which Chad doing quite well in.  He ended up working with her, helping her to improve in the class.  They became pretty good friends; they would have non studying related get togethers.  Chad started liking her, so he decided to start dropping hints here and there to see if she might return his attraction.  After some time, and still getting no response, he began to realize there was nothing there for her.  Finally, as the semester was drawing to a close, he attempted to find out if he would see her during spring semester.  He essentially got brushed off.
